Balirajgarh

Balirajgarh, situated in the Madhubani district of Bihar, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Mithila region, often referred to as the 'Gateway to Ancient Mithila.' This fortified settlement, sprawling over 176 acres, contains ruins that date back to the Northern Black Polished Ware (NBPW) period (c. 600–200 BCE) and continue through the Shunga, Kushana, Gupta, and Pala periods. Recent excavations in 2026 have brought the site back into global focus, revealing sophisticated brick structures, ancient pottery, and terracotta figurines that provide a glimpse into the urban planning and artistic finesse of ancient Maithil civilization. According to local lore, Balirajgarh is associated with the legendary King Bali, though historically it served as a major strategic and cultural hub for centuries. The site's massive mud and brick fortifications, still visible today, testify to its former glory as a sovereign center.
