Why it is celebrated
Celebrates Goddess Parvati’s unwavering penance to wed Lord Shiva, observed by women for marital harmony and devotion.
History and Legend
Named "Haritalika" (Harit + Aalika) because Parvati’s friends (Aalika) abducted (Harit) her into the dense forest so she could perform austere penance for Lord Shiva.
When it is celebrated
Observed on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya (September 14, 2026), one day before Chauth Chandra (Chaurchan).
How it is celebrated
Starts with Nahay-Khay and "Dahi-Chura / Pidakia Oghan" before dawn, followed by a 24-hour Nirjala fast, crafting clay idols of Shiva-Gauri, offering Suhag Pitari, and night-long Haritalika Vrat Katha and Nachari/Maheshvani singing.
About the Festival
In Mithila, Haritalika Teej and Chaurchan occur on consecutive days, turning Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya and Chaturthi into a grand twin celebration. Homes are filled with the aroma of freshly fried Khoya and Suji Pidakia, and women gather in courtyards to worship Parthiv Shiva-Parvati.
