Epic Poetry
Mithila Bhasha Ramayana
Author / Source: Kavishwar Chanda Jha (1831–1907)
“The magnum opus of modern Maithili epic poetry that heralded the Renaissance of modern Maithili literature in the 19th century, centering Mother Sita and the cultural ethos of Videha.”
Literary Significance & Summary
Kavishwar Chanda Jha retold the Ramayana in sweet, idiomatic Maithili verse enriched with local Chhandas, wedding customs (Vivah Panchami traditions), and geographical authenticity. He also translated Vidyapati's 'Purush Pariksha' and rediscovered historical Tirhuta manuscripts across Mithilanchal.
