Anant Chaturdashi Vrat Katha
“The story of Rishi Kaundinya and the Anant thread, symbolizing the bond with the Infinite (Lord Vishnu). Importance of the 14 knots representing 14 worlds.”
Anant Chaturdashi Vrat Katha (Rishi Kaundinya, Sushila & The 14-Knotted Sacred Thread)
1. Counsel of Lord Krishna to the Pandavas
During their arduous exile in the forest after losing their kingdom in the game of dice, King Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna how they could overcome their suffering. Lord Krishna advised him to observe the Anant Chaturdashi Vrat on the 14th day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, worshipping Lord Anant (Vishnu) alongside the sacred *Kusha* grass effigy and wearing the 14-knotted *Anant Sutra*.
2. Sushila's Devotion by the Riverbank
In ancient times, Sage Sumanta and his pious wife Diksha had a virtuous daughter named Sushila. When Sushila was married to Sage Kaundinya, her stepmother Karkasha gave them only a small bundle of roasted flour (*Sattu*). While resting by a riverbank on their journey home, Sushila saw women worshipping Lord Anant. Offering half of her flour, she devoutly tied the 14-knotted Anant thread around her left arm. By the grace of Lord Anant, Kaundinya's hermitage soon overflowed with prosperity and abundance.
3. Kaundinya's Pride & Desecration of the Sacred Thread
Years later, blinded by pride in his wealth, Sage Kaundinya noticed the sacred ribbon on Sushila's wrist and accused her of wearing a charm to subjugate him. Despite her plea that their fortune came from Lord Anant, Kaundinya tore off the thread and flung it into the fire. Though Sushila quickly rescued the burning thread and immersed it in milk, catastrophe struck immediately—their wealth vanished, cattle perished, and they fell into utter poverty.
4. Penance in the Forest & Divine Darshan
Stricken with remorse, Kaundinya wandered through dense forests calling out for Lord Anant. Along the way he encountered mystical visions: a mango tree heavy with untouched fruit, a cow with her calf, two lakes, a donkey, and an elephant. When he collapsed in despair, Lord Vishnu appeared disguised as an elderly Brahmin, revealed His four-armed cosmic form, explained the spiritual lessons behind the visions, and instructed Kaundinya to observe the Anant Vrat for 14 years to regain his lost glory.
5. Symbolism of the 14 Knots
In Mithila and Vedic tradition, the 14 knots of the *Anant Dora* represent the 14 realms (*Chaturdasha Bhuvana*) of the cosmos—7 upper worlds (*Bhu, Bhuvah, Swah, Mahah, Janah, Tapah, Satya*) and 7 subterranean worlds (*Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talatala, Mahatala, Rasatala, Patala*)—all sustained by the Infinite Lord Hari.
