Pradosh Vrat Katha
“Stories associated with Pradosh Vrat, observed to honour Lord Shiva and Parvati. It destroys sins and grants moksha.”
Pradosh Vrat Katha (Grace of Lord Shiva & Sage Shandilya)
1. Glory of the Pradosh Twilight
The sacred twilight period (*Sandhya Kaal*) on the 13th lunar day (*Trayodashi*) of every fortnight is revered as Pradosh. Scriptures declare that during Pradosh Kaal, Lord Shiva dances in cosmic bliss atop Mount Kailash alongside Goddess Parvati, absolving devotees of debt, poverty, and sorrow.
2. The Pious Brahmin Widow & Prince Dharmagupta
In ancient times, a virtuous Brahmin widow lived by seeking alms with her young son Shuchivrata. One day, she found an orphaned boy wandering in the forest—Prince Dharmagupta of Vidarbha, whose father had been slain by enemies who usurped the throne. With maternal compassion, the Brahmin widow raised the prince alongside her own son.
3. Counsel of Maharshi Shandilya
Seeking relief from their hardships, the widow took both boys to the hermitage of Maharshi Shandilya. Through his spiritual vision, the sage recognized the prince's royal lineage and instructed them to observe the Pradosh Vrat dedicated to Lord Shiva on every Trayodashi evening.
4. Union with Anshumati & Restoration of the Kingdom
After four months of devout observance, Prince Dharmagupta encountered Anshumati, the daughter of the Gandharva King, in the forest. Guided by Lord Shiva in a dream, the Gandharva King married Anshumati to Dharmagupta and gifted him a mighty celestial army. Defeating his enemies, Dharmagupta reclaimed the throne of Vidarbha and honored the Brahmin widow as his Queen Mother while appointing Shuchivrata as his Prime Minister.
